Reluctantly, Austin turned away and joined Scott and Zoey as they continued on their journey.

Linda wasn’t home, but Dan left everything out just like he’d promised. Austin had drawn up some plans when he was in the motel room last night. The land was flat, so they didn’t need to do anything to level the yard. Austin unfolded the paper and flattened it on top of the pile of lumber.

“This is what I think he wants,” he told Scott and Zoey, although she was distracted by a sailboat that was gliding by in the Pass.

“It doesn’t look difficult,” Scott commented. “Just sink some pilings, build a frame, and add the floor.”

“And the rails. I’ve got a couple ideas for that, but I thought I’d wait until we get the deck built,” Austin said.

“Let’s get this started. How deep do we have to dig?” Scott weighed the plans down with a rock.

“First, we need to measure it and mark the posts.” Austin looked at the bags of cement that were covered by a plastic tarp. “Zoey, could you see if there’s a garden hose and bring it around here? We need it to mix the concrete,” Austin told her.

“Sure.” She headed around to the front of the house.

Once Austin and Scott had planted stakes where all the posts needed to be, they each picked up a shovel and started to dig. The sand was easy to move, and it didn’t take them long to have six holes, three-foot deep. Zoey returned with a garden hose and connected it to the faucet near the backdoor. Then she found a comfortable place to recline on top of the lumber to catch the sun while the boys worked.

“I think I saw a hoe leaning up against the house in the front yard,” Austin said. “Would you mind getting it?”

Zoey looked over, shading her eyes with her hand. “Are you talking to me?”

“Yes.” The sweat was dripping off him as he rested on his shovel to recover from the digging. Scott had already collapsed onto the ground and was leaning against the concrete block at the backdoor. “We’re kind of busy here.”

She swung her legs over the side of the pile of lumber. “Okay. I’ll go.”

“We should have brought some water,” Scott said.

“We’ve got the hose.” Austin made sure the hose was tightly connected, then turned it on. The water was cool and tasted good. He drank his fill, then held the hose over his head and let the liquid flow over his face and shoulders.

Scott stood up and walked closer. Austin started to hand him the hose, then put his thumb over the end and sprayed Scott. That started a water war that ended with both of them drenched and laughing. Austin turned off the faucet and shook his head, sending a spray arcing around him.

Zoey returned, carrying a hoe.

“What took you so long?” Scott asked. He tried to wring out the ends of his T-shirt without actually taking it off.

“The diaper service was here to make a delivery.
